Ikom – Arrival

Still Pissed Off

Hard to get over this one since my bike is now experiencing issues. The ABS, DTC and cruise control are not working, and the bike does not turn off automatically. There’s either something wrong with the front brake caliper causing ABS/DTC issue, or the computer is fucked. For a couple of short rides, the screen wouldn’t show fuel level or current speed, but that seemed to stop after the third ride…. Fingers crossed. The cruise control button must have gotten smashed on the way down.

Repair Time

So, other than the fog light housing and the pannier being slightly crushed, the other items were: front left blinker is loose, clutch lever broke at the breakage point, cruise control button is loose, and some minor scuffs.

We headed over to Matthew’s outdoor garage where Abdul his mechanic went to work on the bike. There were chickens running around everywhere…

After a couple of hours, Abdul did what he could, and also helped me out with refilling the coolant and crafting a cap for my auto-oiler. Nice!

I went with Big Maka to get some cash at the local market, what a scene.

Time to Meet the Parents

Matthew had some errands to run, apparently his solar power converter blew up in a lightening storm the night before. We headed over to his parents house for some palm wine which was slightly fermented and nice and cold!

We sat in their living room and his father told me stories about his childhood, the farm they own in the community (country), and how life has been getting worse for the past 10 years for everyone.

Matthew and I grabbed some food at a local place and talked about the shitty situation I was facing. He felt horrible about what happened. He said it’s not common in Nigeria for people to apologize in front of others and that the entire group knew it was their fault. Oh well.

We made a couple more stops after a short break at the hotel.

One of them included a cacao warehouse where they were packing up 65 kilo bags of cacao beans that had been brought in from all around. These were being shipped to Lagos.

I headed back to the hotel to get some rest and figure out what my plan was. Benin City was about 5 hours away, but I knew the roads were going to be shit.

This hotel cracked me up with the high-tech shit.
