First Stop – Doha

Makes Perfect Sense – No?

Leaving my family back in Vienna, I headed out the the airport at 6:30 AM. There’s always a little bit of nervousness when you have to put your bags on the scale considering the amount of stuff I had to pack in there – Packing Light and Packing Right. Fortunately for me, everything was well under the limit, so I was good to go – I thought!

Checking In For Flight

The check-in agent then asked my about my return flight, which I responded by saying “I am driving my motorcycle back”, which was true, but not something their system understood. So, after calling over the manager, I was then asked about my “Rental Agreement”, to which I responded “I don’t have one, I am driving my motorcycle from Durban to Norway” Ok, next manager.

So, now there are five people at the desk asking me about visas to Namibia and other stuff, but luckily I had the copies of the Carnet de Passages! They were all very excited, especially one, who was an avid motorcyclist and dreamed about taking a trip like mine. A couple of override codes and I as on my way!

Seat Roulette

Now I know that I am not slim by any means, but I am also not super tall. The seats on this old A320 were so small and so short that I was really worried about someone coming in who would be overflowing the middle seat. I had the window seat and sat down early, which I am not sure is great because all you end up doing is playing passenger lottery watching each person coming down the aisle and hoping one way or another based on their size. Luckily, the middle seat was filled by an average sized Russian woman with her husband on the aisle. The next problem was his horseshit smelling breath and the nine babies screaming around me.

Has anyone ever seen this before?

That’s a crib attached to the wall!! Well, the baby didn’t approve anyway, so it just screamed the whole flight – special shout out to my sis in-law Krissy for bringing my backup noise-cancelling headphones!

It was a five-hour flight, but with some music and movies, it went fast.

We arrived around 4 local time to the desert haze.

Doha Airport Layover

Given that my flight wasn’t boarding for another 8 hours, I decided on a cocktail and some food.

The airport is pretty modern, with some nutty stuff….

Anywho, it was off to the gate in no time – next stop, Mozambique?
