Benin City – Arrival

Ok, so it’s been a long time since my last post. I really didn’t have an internet connection capable of uploading anything until just now and my stupid website ran out of storage due to all the videos…apologies!

Better?

As with all places, you never know what you’re going to end up with when you book a hotel online. Fortunately, this place was pretty nice, although the neighborhood was rather uninviting.

I chose to just stay at the hotel for dinner and get a shower in and a good night’s rest. I was really getting anxious about my bike considering I still had about 4,000 kilometers to Dakar, and about another 3,700 to the ferry to Spain. All in all, about another 150 hours of riding – but who’s counting?

For Dinner?

I was trying to avoid Fufu and just stick with Jollof…

It was an interesting dish. The goat was cooked to about 10% tenderness and for some reason included coleslaw? For all the work they do in Nigeria to make places look fancy, this meal was not.

Well, at least they had beer!

Room With a View?

Definitely not. But boy was it spacious! Of course the air conditioning only worked when you put your room key in, so I had to tape the door lock open so it would cool down before bedtime.

I also received a call from the front desk asking if I could please buy the staff dinner since they hadn’t eaten all day. Fuck it. I told them sure, and gave them 3 million naira or whatever $20 was worth and they called me 3 more time to thank me.

Prince became my new best friend in Benin City the next day. He still chats almost every day.
