Ikom – Departure and Ride to Benin City

8 hours, 30 minutes, 500 kilometers (300 miles)

“Driving through Nigeria is like a Mad Max Film”

That’s what Matthew told me the night before. I had no idea how accurate this would turn out to be.

Daily Diary

Leaving Ikom

I’ll just never understand why everyone in this country is in such a hurry to go nowhere.

The roads out of town weren’t too bad and everything started to clear up and quiet down. It was rather hot, around 92 degrees and very humid, so I was happy to have some open air.

This guy was driving by looking out his open door because all of his windows were covered up. He kept swerving to the other side of the road and speeding up.

Hitting the Highway

People drying coffee beans on the side of the road. The roads were actually in great shape, so I didn’t understand what Matthew was talking about.

Burning garbage always ruins the ride.

Ok, now I get it. The trucks just decide to cross the median and take over your side of the 4-lane highway!

And some construction of course.

Crossing the Niger River

And then back to the insanity.

Hotel?

Got Googled

I don’t know how I managed to stay in such good spirits throughout the day with my damaged bike, but I did… And I made it to the hotel with about and hour of daylight left!!!
